Coimbra has no commercial airport of its own. All international delegates must route their arrival through one of two international airports — Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO) — and then proceed by high-speed train, express bus, or private shuttle.

Mandatory Footwear Warning — Do Not Ignore
Coimbra’s historic upper district (the Alta) is built on steep hills paved entirely in traditional Portuguese cobblestone (calçada). These small limestone and basalt blocks become dangerously slippery when wet or polished by centuries of use. Stilettos, hard-soled dress shoes, and leather-bottom footwear are genuinely hazardous. All delegates exploring the city outside of the conference venue must wear flat-soled, rubber-gripped shoes. This is a safety imperative, not a style suggestion. Ankle injuries on this surface are common among unwarned visitors.

Coimbra is one of Europe’s great intellectual cities. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013, it offers extraordinary heritage landmarks, living musical traditions, and — during conference week — the immersive spectacle of an ancient student festival.
Founded in 1290 and permanently settled in Coimbra in 1537, this is the 4th oldest university in Europe. The monumental Paço das Escolas courtyard, the breathtaking baroque Biblioteca Joanina (over 300,000 manuscripts and books, naturally preserved by a colony of bats that hunt bookworm insects at night), the Sala dos Capelos, the Azulejo-covered Chapel of São Miguel, and the iconic Torre da Universidade all await. Fundamentally different from Lisbon’s fado — this tradition is sung exclusively by male voices (historically, university students in their black capes and gowns), with lyrics centred on academic bohemia and romantic serenades. Queima das Fitas — Critical Briefing for Conference Delegates
What is it?
Portugal’s oldest and largest university graduation festival — first documented in 1899. Students burn a cotton ribbon (in their faculty’s colour) in a ceramic basin, symbolising liberation from exams and academic hierarchy. The entire city transforms: capes, processions, concerts, and serenades fill the streets for over a week.
The Serenata Monumental — Access Restricted
The festival’s most sublime event occurs at midnight on a Thursday at the steps of the Sé Velha cathedral. Access is strictly limited to 4,000 people (students/local residents with wristbands from the AAC/IPC). International delegates cannot simply show up. Alternative: the university installs screens and speakers at Porta Férrea for external viewing.
The Cortejo Académico
A massive Sunday parade of satirical floats winds from the Alta down to the Baixa, effectively paralysing road traffic across the city centre for hours. Plan delegate transport and taxi routes around this event. Walking and pre-booked shuttles are the only reliable options during the parade.
Noites do Parque (Night Concerts)
The riverside Praça da Canção transforms into a major commercial music festival running until dawn. Delegates in riverside hotels should expect elevated noise levels at night. Request rooms on higher floors or facing inward. Use this context operationally — delegate evenings at the festival are a genuine cultural highlight.
Restaurant Pressure
The Baixa and Praça da República area restaurants will be at extreme capacity during afternoons and evenings. Pre-book all group dinners and executive meals well in advance. Consider using hotel dining for non-negotiable meal times.

The ISCAC executive committee deliberately scheduled the conference during Queima das Fitas. Safety, Connectivity & Useful Information
Portugal consistently ranks among the world’s ten safest countries, with near-zero violent crime in university cities like Coimbra. However, the density of festival crowds requires proactive, preventive measures.
The primary risk during festival season. Pickpockets operate in crowded bus lines (SMTUC), train stations in Lisbon and Porto, and during the Cortejo Académico parade. Countermeasures: keep bags in front of your body, never place phones or wallets in exterior pockets, and use zipped inner compartments for conference materials and travel documents.
Rental vehicles are a clear target in Portugal. Organised groups specifically identify car hire signage and foreign plates, targeting vehicles with visible valuables. Absolute rule: leave nothing visible inside the vehicle — not laptops, coats, sunglasses, or bags. Overnight, park in private underground car parks. This justifies the value of hotels like Hotel Oslo or NH Dona Inês with private parking.
Free Wi-Fi is available at cafes, hotels, Alfa Pendular trains, and university campuses. Never access confidential corporate intranets, banking portals, or sensitive documents over public Wi-Fi. Always use a reputable VPN from your home country on any device. For maximum security, rely on private cellular data (eSIM or local SIM) for sensitive work.
eSIM (recommended): The lowest-friction option for unlocked smartphones. Purchase and activate remotely before departure via aggregators like Airalo or Roamless. Connects instantly to Portuguese 4G/5G networks upon landing.
Physical SIM: For eSIM-incompatible devices, MEO, Vodafone Portugal, and NOS have counters at both airport arrivals halls. 7–30 day data-heavy tourist plans available immediately before reaching the train station.
Portugal uses the Euro (€). Contactless card payments (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) and digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are accepted almost universally — including small cafes. For traditional tascas without electronic billing, or navigating cash-only festival stalls, use the reliable Multibanco ATM network. If a terminal offers Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), always decline and pay in Euros to avoid predatory exchange fees.
EU Citizens: Carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/CESD) — it covers or reduces costs at Portuguese public hospitals for acute care.
Non-EU delegates: A comprehensive international health insurance policy is mandatory. For minor ailments, Portuguese pharmacies (green cross sign) offer high-quality primary care advice. Emergency: dial 112.
Coimbra in mid-May typically enjoys warm spring days trending toward early summer conditions. Days are pleasant and mild, making walking and outdoor exploration comfortable.
However, sharp thermal drops occur at night, driven by cold currents from the Mondego river and the cooling of the hillside streets. A light but effective jacket or layer is mandatory for evening events and outdoor sessions. Do not underestimate the night-time temperature differential.
Also account for the possibility of spring showers — the cobblestone pavement (calçada portuguesa) becomes extremely hazardous when wet.
